What Are Cold Sores?

Cold Sores or 'fever blisters' are blister like eruptions, usually around the mouth/lips that are caused by Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV1) a highly contagious virus. Cold Sores are often acquired during childhood from a well-meaning relative giving you that kiss on the cheek!

Sufferers often experience acute embarrassment and feelings of self-consciousness when a blister appears, going as far as to cancel social engagements. During a cold sore episode, people report feeling pain at the site of the blister in addition to a feeling of general malaise, fatigue, irritability and sometimes an accompanying fever.

What Triggers a Cold Sore?

Those who suffer from embarrassing recurrent cold sores and typically dread the next attack, know that many factors can trigger an outbreak.

  • Extra exposure to UV light, such as a sunny holiday abroad or ski trip
  • Meeting a new date
  • Family worries
  • Being under pressure at work
  • Feeling "off color"
  • Having a cold or flu
  • Overdoing alcohol, coffee and some foods
  • Some cosmetic face treatments

Any of these factors can reduce immunity to such an extent that the Herpes Simplex virus can take control.

By using the new Virulite CS® treatment device white blood cells are ‘boosted', enabling them to restore local immunity to normal levels and can prevent the cold sore even appearing, or banish it quickly if it has already erupted.

Is there an Effective Treatment for Cold Sores?

  • Topical antiviral ointments are only moderately effective if applied during the very early tingling phase of the onset of a cold sore and are otherwise of no use. These ointments are messy and require repeated applications, which are inconvenient and expensive.
  • Over the counter ‘remedies' only provide temporary pain relief, using a low dose of lidocaine and moisture to help prevent cracking, they have no affect on the healing time or recurrence rate of cold sores.
  • "Miracle Cure" solutions and ointments are hopeless and do not have any credible clinical trial information on which to base a rational decision to purchase and try them out.
  • Prescription medications (antiviral drugs) require doctor's visits, can be very costly, risk side effects and negative drug interactions and are not suitable for everyone. In addition, while some antiviral medications act to suppress cold sore outbreaks, there is no effect on the body's own immunity to the virus; therefore the suppressive effect only lasts while the patient continues medicating.
